Creating rubrics
To create a rubric, navigate to the Rubrics module and select + New Rubric. The screen for creating a rubric will open:
Basic Information creating rubric
- Provide a title for the rubric (required). This can be, for example, the name of the skill being assessed.
- Optionally, provide a description for the rubric. The description is visible to the student.
- Under settings, you can:
- Make the rubric active immediately.
- Link the rubric to a location (this field is only visible if this module is enabled for your school).
- Link the rubric directly to a specific competency. Ultimately, the score on the rubric will reflect in the competency diagram for the competency specified here.
- Under Show more settings, you can add metadata to the rubric to ensure it can be easily found and also:
- Add an additional author, if desired. Authors have the ability to edit the rubric.
- Display levels in ascending or descending order (this setting is only visible if administrators have enabled it): This means that the default order—platinum, gold, silver, bronze (descending)—can be changed to bronze, silver, gold, platinum (ascending).
- Display criteria weighting: Indicate whether the weightings on the criteria should be visible to students and/or teachers.
Rubric variants
There are four options available in the rubric editor: Traffic Light, G-V-O, Single Point, and Custom Design. The Traffic Light and G-V-O variants are pre-made three-level rubrics with fixed images that can't be changed. The 'Custom Design' variant is the one where you can design your own rubric.
Single point rubric
The single point rubric only has one level and functions differently from the other rubric variants:
If the badge is selected by a student, two input fields will appear for them. These input fields can be provided with text when creating the rubric. Both the header and the text within the field are visible to the student. The student is required to complete the criterion fields before the rubric can be submitted.
When a variant is selected, it can still be changed; however, the rubric must be completely rebuilt from the beginning.
Creating Badges and Criteria
- Assign badges to the rubric. This is only possible in the custom design option, where the configuration has not been pre-set. Click the “+” sign before or after the first two badges to add more. There are two ways to assign badges. Click on a badge if you want to edit it:
- Generate Badge: Use a generator to create various badges. Select from:
- Badge Style: The shape of the badge.
- Collection: The type of icons available.
- Choose icon: The icon that will appear on the badge.
- Upload your own Image: Fully customize the badge by uploading your own image.
- Generate Badge: Use a generator to create various badges. Select from:
A custom rubric must contain a minimum of 2 badges and a maximum of 6 badges.
- Each badge has its own criterion. Each criterion requires a title and describes the conditions for earning that badge. A criterion can include:
- No Information: The text box is left empty.
- An Image: The criterion is displayed with an image of choice.
- Text: The criterion contains only text.
- Image and Text: A combination of an image and text is shown.
The text in a criterion can be formatted using: *Bold* _Italics_ ~
strikethrough~`monospace`
- A rubric can contain multiple criteria. Add an extra criterion by clicking the + Add New Criterion button.
- Several options are available when creating a criterion:
- Move the criterion (only possible if there are multiple criteria) using the blue slide icon.
- Delete the criterion.
- Copy the criterion.
- Assign a weighting to your criterion (only possible with multiple criteria). The total weight must always add up to 100%. When there are multiple criteria, you can lock the percentage by using the Freeze % option to keep the assigned weight fixed. If it is not locked, weights will adjust evenly across all criteria to total 100%.
Copy a rubric
You may want to modify a rubric—for instance, if you wish to use an existing rubric from another author but add your own adjustments, or if a rubric in use can no longer be edited because students are already working on it, or simply because you want to make changes for the current year. For these reasons, rubrics can easily be copied and modified.
To copy a rubric, open the menu by clicking the arrow icon and select Copy.
