Measuring skills and competencies

Once the competencies and/or skills have been created, they can be measured in Simulise. This can be done once the following steps are completed:

  • Link the skill to a rubric.
  • Develop an assignment and link the rubric to it.

If the student has submitted the assignment and it has been assessed, the diagram will begin to develop based on the skill linked to the rubric.

Example: A student receives the assignment "Working on a project." This assignment is linked to the rubric "Collaboration," which is in turn linked to the skill "Collaboration." When submitting the assignment, the student reflects on the Collaboration rubric. Afterwards, the assessor reflects on the same rubric. The scores from both reflections are displayed, each on its own line, in the skills diagram on the "Collaboration" axis.

A diagram contains 4 different types of colors. The colors are categorized as follows:

  • Teacher: All assessments made by teachers on a particular competency.
  • (Student's name): All self-assessments made by the student.
  • Others: All assessments made by external parties.
  • Student: All assessments made by other students.

Detailed overview of competencies and assignments per axis (competency score page)

You can view the breakdown of scores by clicking on an axis. A new screen will open, showing all assignments that have been completed or need to be completed for that competency.

The overview is divided into earned badges with their corresponding assignments. The assessments from both the teacher and the student are displayed side by side. By hovering over the bars, you can see how they are structured.

Color codes of the bar:

  • Grey - not completed: there are assignments assigned to the student but not yet completed or submitted.
  • Red - not assigned: this is the total score for the section where the student has not received the full score.
  • Orange - not reviewed: the student has submitted work, but it has not yet been reviewed by the teacher.
  • Other colors: these represent the achieved score for the various assignments or badges.

How is the score on an axis in a competency diagram calculated?

On the page mentioned above, you can see which assignments contributed to the competency score. This can be found under "x of x badge(s) awarded, x badges still need to be assessed." In the table, you will see the following details:

  • The name of the rubric that has been filled out.
  • The name of the assignment linked to the rubric.
  • The awarded badge from both the school and the student themselves.
  • When the assessment took place.

An assignment can be assessed in different ways, which affects the competency score:

  • Completed without assessment: When an assignment is completed without an assessment, this result does not count towards the skills diagram.
  • Completed with assessment: The value that results from this assessment is included in the skills diagram.
  • Completed with assessment, but no badge awarded: A value of 0 is counted for this assignment in the skills diagram.
  • Deadline Passed: The student did not submit the assignment on time, but there is a deadline associated with the assignment. The score will now be counted as 0 in the diagram (including under Show only finished assignments).
  • Deadline Expired but Submission Still Allowed: If a student misses the assignment deadline but submission is still permitted, the initial score will be recorded as zero in the competency diagram (including under Show finished Assignments Only).

However, if the student later submits the assignment after the deadline and it is reviewed, this assessment will then count toward their skills diagram.

  • Not Yet Assessed: This status applies when a student has submitted the assignment, but it is still pending review. Until it is evaluated, the assignment will be temporarily recorded with a score of zero.

The following table: "There are still x badge(s) to be earned" also affects the score in the skills diagram.

  • If an assignment with mandatory rubrics has been assigned and the assignment has not yet been completed, it will result in a score of 0 for the skill.
  • If an assignment with optional rubrics has been assigned and the assignment has not yet been completed, no score will be included in the diagram.
  • Assignments with the status Deadline expired, but the student is still able to submit the assignment.

Example calculation of a score in the competency diagram

If an assignment includes 3 rubrics, all linked to the competency "Collaboration," each rubric will contribute 33% to the score on the axis for that specific assignment.

Each of the 3 rubrics has 4 levels. By default, unless otherwise modified, each level is weighted as follows: Bronze: 25%, Silver: 50%, Gold: 75%, and Platinum: 100%

If the student achieves the following scores on the 3 rubrics: Silver, Gold, Silver, the score for this assignment on the axis will be calculated as follows:

  • 50 (Silver) + 75 (Gold) + 50 (Silver) = 175
  • 175 / 300 (total possible score) = 0.5833
  • This results in a score of 58.

Finally, the average score from all the student's assignments is calculated and displayed in the diagram.
