Create a portfolio assignment
A portfolio assignment is a formalassignment. It has different assessment options compared to regular assignments. The evaluation of this assignment provides visibility in the circular diagram associated with the course.
The terms used below can be modified as desired via the translation module:

Creating a portfolio assignment
- Navigate to the Courses module.
- Select the course for which you want to create a portfolio assignment.
- At the bottom of the page, click + New Portfolio Assignment.
Fill in the following details:
- Title (required): Give the assignment a title. The title will be visible to everyone who receives the assignment.
- Description (required): Choose between Text, File, or Link to provide additional details for the assignment. The chosen format will be visible within the assignment.
- Under Settings, you can configure the following:
- Active: Decide whether the assignment is active. Active portfolio assignments can be assigned to students.
- Aspects: Specify which aspects the assignment is linked to. The assignment can be assessed based on the connected aspects.
- Click Finish & Next to proceed to defining the deliverables.
Linking deliverables to a Portfolio Assignment
Deliverables indicate what the student must submit in order to complete the assignment. You can choose from:
Portfolio Item
A portfolio item is considered an individual document within the student’s portfolio. These can be found under the student’s Work tab in the portfolio. When choosing the Portfolio Item option, fill in the following details:
- Title (required): The title of the deliverable will be visible to everyone who views the assignment.
- Description: Optionally, provide a short description. This will be visible to everyone who views the assignment.
- Allowed types: Specify which file types can be submitted for this assignment.
- Blog: Define the minimum and maximum word count required for the blog before it can be submitted.
- Deliverable is optional: Indicate whether this deliverable is optional. If so, the student is not required to submit it.
- Multiple items allowed: Indicate whether the student may select multiple items from their portfolio for this deliverable. Then specify the minimum and maximum number of items that must be submitted.
Page
A page is considered a page within the student’s portfolio. Pages are displayed inside the student’s portfolio. When choosing the Page option, fill in the following details:
- Title (required): The title of the deliverable will be visible to everyone who views the assignment.
- Description: Optionally, provide a short description. This will be visible to everyone who views the assignment.
- Page is optional: Indicate whether the deliverable is optional. If so, the student is not required to submit it.
- Allow editing after review: Decide whether the page can be edited after it has been assessed.
- When this setting is disabled (default), the page remains locked after assessment.
Page Template
A page template created in the Templates module can be linked as a deliverable to a portfolio assignment. The connection with the student is established through the assignment. When choosing the Page Template option, fill in the following details:
- Title (required): The title of the deliverable will be visible to everyone who views the assignment.
- Description: Optionally, provide a short description. This will be visible to everyone who views the assignment.
- Select a template (required): Choose one of the templates created in the Templates module.
- Allow editing after review: Decide whether the template page can be edited after it has been assessed.
- When this setting is disabled (default), the page remains locked after assessment.
Linking Resources to a Portfolio Assignment
Resources linked to a portfolio assignment are displayed under the assignment description and are visible to everyone who has access to the assignment.
- Files: Add files to the assignment description. Students can open and/or download these files.
- Videos: Link videos (e.g., from YouTube) to the assignment. Students can watch the videos directly.
- Links: Attach a hyperlink to the assignment. Students can open the link by clicking on it.
What does the course look like now?
The portfolio assignments created for the course are displayed at the front of the course. Additionally, they also appear under their corresponding aspects.
Assigning a Portfolio Assignment to Students
A portfolio assignment is not immediately visible to students after creation. It must first be assigned. To do this:
- Navigate to the Courses module.
- Select the course where you want to assign a portfolio assignment.
- Next to the portfolio assignment, click the blue square icon and choose Students.
- Now decide whether you want to assign the assignment to an entire group or to individual students.
Fill in the following details:
- Students/Groups: Select the students or groups you want to assign the portfolio assignment to.
- The assignments will appear for the students in their course and in their assignments module.
- Start Date: Set the date from which students can begin working on the assignment. The assignment will only become visible from the start date.
- Deadline: Set the deadline for the assignment. Then choose whether students are allowed to submit after the deadline.
